Final Fantasy IV: The After - February 18

February 13, 2008

Square-Enix has announced that their mobile platform sequel to Final Fantasy IV will be available for i-mode phones in Japan on February 18, 2008. Info on this Japanese exclusive is still pretty sketchy, but here’s a translated prologue for you:

Once…the people’s prayers saved a blue star. And, two moons became one as time passed…
The day of the departure is nearing for the boy who inherits the blood of the holy knight.
A boat is flying through the skies, from this airship he looks up at the heaven. There, two moons are (again) floating. The size of one of these moons is already increasing.

Why did that moon return? A new destiny is beginning to emerge hastily.
Now, the crystal did awakens again through change, and is filled with a gentle light.

A North American release hasn’t been ruled out but it hasn’t been mentioned either. I’ll keep you posted.

Final Fantasy Little King Trailer 2

February 13, 2008

This particular trailer shows off a job changing ability that appears to be constant throughout the game.

More Final Fantasy VII Remake Gossip

February 7, 2008

A recent interview with PTOM magazine by Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core director Hajime Tabata eventually came around to the possiblity of a Final Fantasy 7 remake. To quote directly:

PTOM: So that Final Fanasy 7 remake that you’ve said will never happen: Why?

Tabata: I think it is because the conditions that are necessary to remake the game have not been met at this time. The possibility for a remake may become greater if, for instance, the schedueles of the original members of the Final Fantasy 7 development team, such as Kitase (Yoshinori, director) and Nomura, (Tetsuya, designer/story) open up.

Nothing definite there obviously, but Square is keeping the rumors alive! To be honest, I can’t see why they wouldn’t remake it at some point. Given all of the interest, it’s no wonder Square is choosing to remake other titles while it lets the suspense build. It’s coming, I guarantee it :)

Final Fantasy IV DS Scan

February 7, 2008

The developers at Square are hard at work on a slew of new titles, not the least of which is the remake of Final Fantasy 4 for the Nintendo DS. Either the game is going to retain the 2D graphics seen in the Gameboy Advance remake or this article is simply making comparisons - I don’t read Japanese so I can’t be 100% sure :) Click the thumbnail for the full view!

Final Fantasy XIII Release Rumors Untrue

January 31, 2008

There has been a lot of buzz online for the last few weeks suggesting that Final Fantasy 13 would see a 2008 release, but that speculation has been put to rest with a press release from Square-Enix:

“Although information regarding the release date of Final Fantasy 13 has been reported by certain videogame websites, Square-Enix itself has yet to make an official statement on this topic. Any reports of a confirmed release date are erroneous and should be disregarded.

Square-Enix will make an official announcement in the future concerning the release date when it has been determined. “

So 2008 is just speculation and 2009 is much more likely. Exhale, FF fanatics!

Final Fantasy 13 Prologue

January 25, 2008

Famitsu has been quite forthcoming with new info concerning Final Fantasy XIII lately and a translation for the official prologue has been floating around. Games in the series have always been accompanied by a story-setting piece and this should give you a good taste of the planned plot for FF13.

Built by a great entity, it is a society floating in the sky, enclosed in a “shell” - Cocoon.

It flourishes, protected by the great machines and living creatures invented by the Crystal.

The inhabitants of Cocoon, in a long period of tranquility, fear infection from the outside.

Outside the shell, an underworld — the entity of “Pulse” awakens. Fearing this faceless invader, the people begin to suspect one another, and hatred takes root.

Cocoon’s government, wishing for stability, takes emergency measures. They arrest large numbers of citizens, suspected of being “infected from the outside”, and announced that they would be compelled to migrate to this underworld, “Pulse“. In reality, it meant banishment, but the fate which awaited them was even more cruel than that…

The crystal, a symbol of harmony, chose a person to whom they would entrust destiny… to lead the world.

She was chosen.

To be the enemy of mankind, who will ruin the world.

Final Fantasy: Ring of Fates English Trailer

January 19, 2008

With a planned March release in both Europe and North America Square is hard at work translating Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates into English and they’ve released a video to prove it!

The translation looks a little spotty at times but I’m sure they’re working on it. In the meantime we have what looks to be a graphically beautiful FFCC title to keep us busy on our Nintendo DS handhelds for a while.
