Final Fantasy IV: The After

January 4, 2008

Final Fantasy IV: The AfterFinal Fantasy is a series that has made a point to include a entirely new world and storyline with each game released in the series. Save for running themes such as the name “Cid” and the beloved chocobo, a sequel has only been created once in the form of Final Fantasy X-2, a game that continued the story of Yuna and her (female) friends from Final Fantasy X.

Despite the apparent rarity of Final Fantasy sequels, Square-Enix has just announced the upcoming release of Final Fantasy IV: The After, a game that focuses on the events following the trip to the moon in Final Fantasy IV.

Final Fantasy 4: The After follows the story of Theodore, none other than the son of Cecil and Rosa. Appearances by Yang, Cecil, Rosa, Edge and Kain have been confirmed by Square though little else is known about the storyline at this point.

The big (and very disappointing) catch? The game is being developed exclusively for mobile phones with no planned release on popular consoles or handhelds. Japanese gamers will be able to play the game in chapter format, downloading new chapters as they become available. Whether the game will ever see North America is unknown for now but, if Before Crisis is any indication, I wouldn’t hold my breath.
